Pampering

With the weight of my belly and boobs pulling me forward and aching legs sometimes I really feel like I need to relax.

Some time ago my husband got me a voucher from a Relaxation facility nearby for a Pregnancy Hydrotherm Massage. This is a three dimensional massage technique, where you lay on two warm water pillows, with your spine in perfect alignment and remaining face up throughout the treatment. The gentle heat of the water increases local circulation and helps with the removal of toxins, therefore not only being relaxing it is also detoxifying. The specialist massage therapist then puts on pregnancy-safe oils and gently massages legs, back, belly, shoulders, arms and face for a whole 75 minutes.

As well as making you feel great, having this massage during pregnancy can be therapeutic for both mother and baby. The massage therapist was very delicate and attentive to my needs.

After this massage I felt revived and calmer in body and mind. It helped with my aching legs and shoulders.

The perfect treatment during pregnancy!

Just a heads-up about this type of treatment. I, too, had a hydrotherm massage - at 34 weeks pregnant. I am not good at laying on my back due to the bump (the weight of the bump presses against the vena cava, cutting off the blood supply for mother and baby). I was told to lay flat on my back on the pillows and when questioned the therapist said it was designed for pregnant women so I'd be fine. I was not - I ended up retching and almost fainting.
When pregnant you should not lay flat on your back after 16-18 weeks. I am really glad the treatment was good for you, even though it does sound like you were laying flat down. However, it suggests that the treatment was not carried out by a fully trained therapist.
Hydrotherm train therapists to deliver this treatment to pregnant women in a special course. No-one should offer this treatment unless they have this training - otherwise they are not insured.
For pregnant women the back rest needs to be at a higher angle - not flat - and the pillows should not be above 30 degrees.
Please, if you have this treatment (and done properly I am sure it is great) please make sure your therapist is fully trained in hydrotherm pregnancy massage.
Thanks,

Boo

Sorry to hear it wasn't a good experience for you! Guess it doesn't work the same for everyone then :( It can get very hot especially if the room is already warm. I wasn't usually fine lying on my back for a long time but it felt good there maybe because my legs were arched a bit and I had a pillow as well. It's a must that we check that the therapists are fully trained to do this type of massage!
