Music in the Womb

Sunday, 17 May 2009 13:50 by Mari

I am getting quite tired lately. So after whinging how I'm going to cope during the upcoming 3 months, I sat on the sofa, laptop on my thighs, my legs resting on a stool. Aerosmith playing in the background, a perfect moment to relax I thought.

Until I felt a lot of movement in my belly. Great, he likes Aerosmith - Jaded. Let him rock! And as the music stopped, the movement stopped as well. This made me curious.

Chatting to my friend Liri, who is a pyschology grad, later that night I mentioned this to her and as she wrote her thesis on this subject she knew quite a bit about it.

It was then that I was introduced to the Mozart effect. This study shows that listening to classical music while pregnant makes the baby smarter and calms him/her down. Although the making the baby smarter part is not proved a 100%, it definitely soothes the baby.  In fact mums-to-be who listen to rock music feel more vigorous kicks from their baby. Aha! That's why then. So I think from now on I'm going to switch to classical music. Singing nursery rhymes also keeps the baby calm. (Tried and tested by me :) )

Here is more information about Mozart effect.

I got these CD's from Amazon. They are a very good listen and calm both mother and baby down. I listen to them before going to sleep and find them very relaxing.

Hey

Great job with this blog ... it is a must-read for any mummuy-to-be or anyone thinking about it .. ohhh and their partners of course :) It's even a good read for us who do not fit in any of those categories ... I enjoy it!

Glad to read classical music is working and helping in the relaxing part.  Probably it will prove right in the smarts as well ... considering the parents it's a sure bet :p

Keep it up!

Hi,

I like to read your blog to know how your pregnancy is progressing ;) In Peru I discovered more about this music theory, they believe a lot in it. My then pregnant friend also had New Age Baby CDs. What I'm sure of is that it's good to talk to the baby at this stage cause it is starting to recognize voices. Ever noticed any change in movement or something when you talked to him and your husband does?

Nice blog... Keep us up-dated!

PS My green monster is horrible. Couldn't I change it?!
