Feeding Time

Friday, 29 January 2010 11:17 by Mari

I cannot believe how fast time is going by... I've had an eventful two weeks. Euan has been growing very fast lately could be because we started him on solid foods.

He used to cry, scream and shout everytime I was to eat something - even before I started eating he will know I'm preparing something to eat. I would give him food to try from my fingers. But he wanted more. The leaflets I read about say you should start at around 6 months so I was a bit worried that I'm going to start him early. When I couldn't wait any longer, I gave the health visitor a call and she said I should start him on some baby rice.

I got him the baby rice and that same evening I made him some. Wolfed it down like someone's chasing him. So I made him some more, and more, and more... It seems like he never stops eating - wonder where he gets THAT from. :)

I gave him some vegetables the next day and yesterday we went to the baby clinic for a weigh. He now weighs 7kg - a good weight. They suggested I start to give him lunch too now - looking forward to another mess at noon :)

Luckily the Rainforest Fisher-Price highchair we got him from Amazon.co.uk makes life easier as it's got adjustable heights and three reclining positions. Also, both the back of the chair and the straps are all machine washable and it also has a removable tray that you can pop in the dishwasher.

Bath Time!

Friday, 26 June 2009 10:30 by Mari

Bath time should be a good time for bonding with the baby so I want to make sure that the environment is set up for this.

Changing unit

I have been looking at changing units that have a concealed bath underneath the changer. I have seen this at a friend's place but they are not very popular in the UK. However I managed to find some online. It is good for me to have one of these as I still need to get a changer and bathing the baby should be more comfortable on a unit rather than in the bath (and in the meantime take care of my back!)

The Cosatto Easi-Peasi Changing Unit Zuton fits perfectly in my tiny bathroom and it has shelves where I can store products, a few baby grows, nappies and towels. It has a drainage tube as well.

Scallywags Bath/Changing unit

Another unit that I'm looking at is Mamas & Papas - Tub Time Changing Station - Made With Lo it's only a few pounds dearer but it comes with two positions and non slip surface, a deep padded pvc changing mattress, which works on a secondary lock when lifted for added safety, with two wheels for easy manoeuvrability, Towel rail and additional wash cup.

A cheaper option would be the Scallywags Bath/Changing unit. It doesn't have any of the fancy stuff and with just one shelf you cannot use it as a storage unit but it does the job it acts both as a bath and a changer.

Hygiene for the first few weeks

At the antenatal classes I was quite confused to hear that for the first few weeks the baby doesn't need to bath and if you do it shouldn't be more than once a week in a top and tail bath (I got one with compliments of MC) :) and later on in a bath. Also, you shouldn't be using any un-natural products on the baby.

The midwife suggested gently cleaning the face with cotton wool and water and when changing nappies wiping front to back with cotton wool and water. You don't need to use anything else. Baby wipes are far too harsh for new born skin. (she said you can wipe off markers from walls with them! Handy tip for later :) ) If the baby develops dry skin or nappy rash, olive oil (or sunflower oil) should do the job as other baby creams contain far too many chemicals as does soap.

Getting stuff for the baby

Tuesday, 16 June 2009 18:16 by Mari

Wow what a relief we started buying stuff for the little one! I was starting to get worried, you need to get so much stuff for the baby I wasn't sure where to begin.

I am now nearly 31 weeks pregnant and I'd like to have everything ready as soon as possible. So we identified the 3 big ones which are the cot, the travel system and the bath cabinet and this week we managed to tick the first two from the list which is a BIG achievement me thinks :)

Yesterday we spent half a day going round at IKEA having a look at lots of stuff that we needed for the house (shower curtain, dish drainer etc) and finally we had a look at the nursery section. We had been looking at cots all over the place and here we found something that we liked. It can have the bed base at 2 different heights and the side of the cot is removable for when the kid grows up and s/he can get in and out of bed on his/her own.

From here as well we got a chest of drawers for all the clothes and stuff that the baby already got from friends and family! It is very spacious but I'm sure we'll fill it up soon.

All we need to do now is get poor husband to assemble this furniture :D

Today we went to John Lewisto have a look at the iCandy Cherry travel system. It is the Silver 2008-2009 winner of the Mother and Baby awards. It is also the lightest travel system that I came across weighing only 8kg. The sales assistant there took us through all the features and we had a play around with it. Both my husband and I liked the style of both the pushchair and the carry cot. It is also very easy to use and manouver so we decided to go for it! It has very similar features the Bugaboo Cameleon featured in this article. The Bugaboo Cameleon has inflatable tyres and adjustable handles and the iCandy Cherry does not. Also the Bugaboo Cameleon has a slightly longer carry cot but this one is £200 cheaper (and this includes the carry cot and the car seat adapters), I guess for Bugaboo you have to pay for the name too.

While we were at John Lewis we had a look at the car seat as well. We finally decided on the MaxiCosi Cabriofix Car Seat in Deep Red to match the travel system. This car seat has deep sides for extra side impact protection, a 5-point adjustable harness, head support, buckle and harness pads so baby is comfortable when strapped in and a sun canopy for bright days. The curved base allows you to gently rock baby in a soothing motion when you arrive at your destination.

To go with that we got also the MaxiCosi EasyBase that is fixed to the back seat of the car as a car seat base. This has colour indicators to show when it's installed correctly and the whole system feels very secure once the car seat is popped in as it hardly moves at all.

What do you think of all this? Have you bought something similar to this? Please let us know if you liked it.

Choosing a cot... or is it a cotbed?

Monday, 1 June 2009 18:21 by Mari

Thanks to everyone for your messages and cards! I had a fab day yesterday... it was my 30th!

To celebrate, I went shopping! Fortunately the DH (dear husband)(:-O) got off work early and he came to meet me at the shopping centre where we visited some baby furniture.

Have been thinking for a while about the cot, what kind? what size? and this helped us to get a clearer idea of what we want and really need.

For those of you unfamiliar with the subject, a cot bed is a cot with removable sides and end panel so it can be converted into a toddler-sized bed. We are going to go for a cot because as AK suggested it leaves more space next to the bed.

Below are our desired features:

  • Drop down side/s to get the baby in and out of the cot easily OR
  • Removable side to align it with our bed and make night time feeding easier
  • Height adjustable base
  • Teething rail

We saw the Cosatto Close To Me Bedside Cot in Beech that we really liked. The frame is very nice and solid. We particularly liked the removable slide mechanism that goes underneath the bed. This cot complies to safety standard BS 716.

But we're thinking maybe we go for the simpler version that has a drop side mechanism only such as Anna Drop Side Cot in White as we aren't having a nursery set up any time soon and it might not be worth paying an extra £132 just for the removable side! This cot complies to safety standard BS 716.

Look out for the BS 716 when buying a new cot to make sure that your baby cannot easily fall out or get his or her head trapped between the bars. If you buy a second-hand cot or are given one from a friend or family member, you can check the important measurements yourself.
The cot should be at least 49.5cm(20") deep to make sure your baby cannot climb out and bars should be vertical with spacing of 4.5cm to 6.5cm (2" to 3") between them
